Jesús Max Back from paradise

Celia after the dragons (after Rafael Sanzio)
Jesús Max 2010
Oil on Gessobord
30 x 24 inches

Paradise (after Albert Bierdstadt)
Jesús Max 2009
Oil on canvas
36 x 36 inches

Jesús Max’s latest exhibition in our Gallery – Back from paradise – consists of two different and consecutive series of paintings made during the last three years.

The former set are paintings of objects where laboratory instruments and other artefacts appear on abstract surfaces or unlikely landscapes. With a great emphasis put on colour, these images work as a conceptual paradox.

The latter set is more numerous and was produced immediately after. It’s formed by portraits of people from the artist environment with a pronounced allegorical nature. Some of the portrayed characters inhabit fragments of Patinir, Rafael or Poussin’s, landscapes where the anatomic proportions are altered in conflict with the apparent realism of the figures. Floating eyes and various types of creatures share the scene with the depicted characters creating sometimes a fairy-tale atmosphere.

Despite of the obvious differences, both series have common elements: the interest for the hidden, the tragicomedy tone and the veiled reference to Paradise (or rather its scarcity).

The spirit of this exhibition is that of a cabinet painting collection but far away from monumentalism. The intention is to establish a dialogue with the beholder, bringing out the mystery of the artworks, replacing size for intensity. The title, as one would expect, offers several clues, both literally referring to the transatlantic voyage – back and forth – of the artist and his works, and the metaphorical one to the garden of Eden, childhood and love.
